rethink: low/no buy 2025
Happy new year! If you want to skip yapping, you can swipe for my no / low but year guidelines for 2025.
If you stuck around, hello from my annual New Year’s Day hike. It was on my 2024 hike that my husband encouraged me to push forward with my idea of talking about my version of sustainability, repurposing, thrifting, mending, reusing. So happy one year to this little space.
I’ve included my guidelines for 2025, building off my NO NEW BEAUTY plan. I want to point out that I’ve seen some people bring up that no / low buy years can hurt small businesses. And I want to say that at the heart of a no / low buy year, to me, it is about reflecting on *how* and *why* we buy so much in the context of capitalism. It’s about divesting from corporations, useless junk, and waste. Of course buy from small and/or local businesses - especially ones who share your values! Those are my favorite kinds of places!
For me, it’s also about understanding the *why* of my shopping too (Supporting a local business? Feeling sad? Feeling insecure? Feeling like I deserve a treat?) I want to better understand my relationship to stuff and money, and focus my energy on actually *doing* the repairing, repurposing, mending, creative outlet. *AND* let’s focus on community building, skill sharing, borrowing, and bartering! It’s a great way to meet your neighbors.
So without further ado, swipe for my guidelines this year.
I’ll plan to expand on them as I explore what this little pocket of the internet becomes in 2025.
And remember, practice makes progress (not perfection.) Any small step is worth it.
